More than 12,000 people participated in the conference, which featured seven scientific plenaries, nine parallel sessions, two special sessions and eight abstract-driven sessions in addition to nearly 40 official side events. More than 230 speakers presented during the CPHIA 2021 programme, including public health experts, scientists, researchers, government leaders from around the world. Speakers featured during the opening and closing ceremonies included: H.E. Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda and AU Champion for Domestic Health Financing; Dr. Daniel Ngamije, Minister of Health for Rwanda; H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union; Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO); Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, Director of the WHO Regional Office for Africa; Dr. John Nkengasong, former director of the Africa CDC; and Dr. Olive Shisana, Special Policy Advisor to the President of South Africa.

1. What is the Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA)?

The inaugural Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA), hosted by the Africa CDC and the African Union, is a three-day conference that will create a unique platform for participants to collaborate on research, innovation, and public health across the continent. CPHIA 2021 aims to help accelerate progress in the fight against COVID-19, while also addressing long-standing health emergencies such as HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria.

By creating more collaborative networks and encouraging multi-sectoral coordination, the conference can help improve solidarity and speed in responding to future threats.

We hope that CPHIA will grow into the preeminent annual public health gathering in the region.

2. Where will CPHIA 2021 be hosted?

CPHIA 2021 is a virtual conference, which will allow participation from anywhere with an internet connection. We hope to be able to gather in person in future years.

3. Is CPHIA 2021 free to attend?

Yes. CPHIA 2021 is free for all attendees.

4. Who is organizing CPHIA 2021?

CPHIA is hosted by the Africa CDC and African Union, with support from an Organizing Committee of public health experts from Africa and around the world.

5. Who should attend CPHIA 2021?

The CPHIA aims to reach individuals from academic and government institutions; national, regional, community and faith-based organizations; private sector firms; as well as, researchers, front-line health workers and advocates. Anyone, however, is welcome to participate in the conference.

Young professionals who recently began their careers in public health and related fields
are especially encouraged to attend in order to share their research, hone their skills and receive mentorship from others. More details on these opportunities will be shared in the coming months.
